Frequently Asked Questions Related to Cardiac Catheterization

Before the Procedure (3 Questions):

Cardiac catheterization is the procedure in which a thin, flexible tube called as catheter is being guided through the blood vessel to heart for the diagnosis of some heart conditions such as clogged arteries and irregular heartbeats.

Cardiac catheterization is commonly done for the diagnosis of variety of heart conditions such as irregular heartbeats, chest pain or any heart valve problems.  This is also done in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease, congenital heart disease, heart failure, heart valve disease and microvascular heart disease.

During cardiac catheterization the doctor can locate the blockage in blood vessels which can cause pain and measure the pressure  and oxygen level in different parts of heat, widening a narrowed artery (angioplasty) with or without stent placement and treating irregular heart rhythms with cold or heat energy (cardiac ablation).

During the Procedure (3 Questions):

Cardiac catheterization is done at hospital. The doctor and nurse will give you all the instructions such as restrictions of eating and drinking before the procedure. You should inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking such as herbal and dietary supplements.

Cardiac catheterization will take only 30 minutes but the preparation and the recovery of the procedure will take several hours.

When the doctor injects the dye into your heart, you may feel hot or flushed. This is normal and will go away in a few seconds. The X-ray camera will take photographs of your arteries and heart chambers. Your doctor may ask you to take a deep breath, hold your breath, or cough during the procedure. You’ll need to hold your breath while they’re taking the X-rays.

Post the Procedure (4 Questions):

After cardiac catheterization the doctor will watch you for a few hours to make sure you’re feeling.

To help prevent infection, your wound will be covered with a sterile dressing.

You’ll need to lie flat and keep your leg straight for 2 to 6 hours to prevent bleeding. To avoid straining your abdomen and groin, you’ll need to keep your head low (no more than two pillows high). You won’t be able to sit up or stand during this time.

Your doctor will tell you what they found during the procedure and whether they needed to do any other procedures, like an angioplasty or stent.

Cardiac catheterization is very safe procedure but it has also got some risks such as hole in the blood vessels, air embolism, allergic reaction to dye, bleeding, blood clots, bruises, heat attack, infection or kidney damage.
