More about Forehead Lift

Forehead lift or a brow lift is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove or change lines around the forehead, eyes, and upper eyelids due to signs of ageing. During the surgery, soft tissues and skin of the forehead and brows are lifted-up.

Typical candidates are people in their 40s to 60s. People with inherited conditions like droopy eyebrows who are in their 20s or 30s are also suitable candidates for this surgery.

Ideal candidates for surgery

  • Generally, people who have reached 40 years of age
  • Furrows between the eyes that are deep
  • Wrinkles on the forehead
  • Eyebrows that are sagging
  • Droopy eyelids due to sagging
  • Hereditary problems for people in their 20s and 30s with droopy eyebrows

Types of Surgical Procedure

  • Traditional surgery: A continuous incision made from your ear level to going up around the hairline on the forehead.
  • Endoscopic surgery: With a thin tube and small camera, small incisions are made on the hairline
  • Coronary surgery: An incision is made behind your hairline from ear to ear, usually for those with high forehead, thin hair, or likely to lose their hair.

Examination

  • Physical examination of the face
  • Measurements of different parts of your face with eyes opened and closed
  • Photographs may be taken for medical record.

Procedure

Before Procedure

  • Physical examination and measurements of the face
  • Review of your medical history
  • Discuss your expectations and ask as many questions as possible
  • Psychological evaluations may also be done
  • With your doctor, you can evaluate whether to opt for a traditional or endoscopic surgery or coronary brow lift
  • You may be asked to stop certain medications you are currently taking like blood thinners etc two weeks before surgery
  • You will be asked to stop smoking four weeks before surgery
  • Do not eat or drink 8 – 12 hours before surgery
  • Take medications given only with small sips of water
  • Ensure that you do not wear any make-up, jewelry, or contact lens on the day of surgery.

During Procedure

  • The surgery will take around one to two hours
  • This will be on an out-patient basis
  • Your hair on the area of the incision may be trimmed or shaved
  • A general anesthesia will be given to you so that you do not feel any pain
  • If it is a traditional surgery, your doctor will make an incision from the ear level across the forehead below the hairline
  • The skin will be raised so that the wrinkles will be smoothened and there is a repositioning of the brows
  • If there is any excess skin, it is removed
  • The incision is closed with sutures/adhesives or, special clips
  • If you are going for an endoscopic surgery, some small incisions are made along the scalp
  • An endoscope is inserted through the incision and the surgeon can see where corrections are needed
  • With another instrument, the forehead is lifted, the brows repositioned, and the line causing muscle tissue is removed
  • Excess skin is removed and closed with sutures
  • If a coronary brow lift is done, the incision is made behind the hair line from ear to ear or on top of your head
  • Your forehead will be lifted to its new position
  • The scalp in front of the incision overlaps with the scalp behind it
  • This overlap skin is removed, and the remaining scalp sewn together
  • Before dressing is applied, your face and hair will be washed to prevent any irritation.

After Procedure

  • Your face will be covered in sterile pads and elastic bandage to prevent bleeding and swelling
  • You will feel some discomfort, tightness, or numbness around the surgical area
  • You will be given medications to control the pain
  • A small tube might be placed along the incision area to drain any fluid
  • For 2 - 3 days, keep your head elevated to prevent swelling and cold compression may help reduce these conditions
  • Bruising and swelling around the cheeks and eyes will fade after a few days
  • Once recovery starts, the numbness may turn itchy or tingles. This could take up to 6 months to fully disappear
  • Bandages will be removed in a day or two while stitches may take up to two weeks
  • You will experience thinner hair around the cut, but this will normally grow back after weeks or a month or two
  • You can shower and shampoo after the bandages are removed or two days after the surgery
  • Avoid doing manual lifting, vigorous exercise, or other strenuous activities for a few weeks.

Risks and complications

As with every surgery, it is not without possible complications although rare. Some that could arise are:

  • Scarring
  • Coronary brow lift can cause temporary or permanent numbness on top of the head
  • Hair problems will occur which means it is possible to have elevated hair line or loss of hair at the incision area. This can be corrected with scar excision or hair grafting
  • Asymmetrical position of the brows which can be too high. This is rectified with another surgery
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection
  • Allergy to anaesthesia

Factors affecting the cost of surgery

The cost of Forehead lift depends on various factors like:

  • Choice of hospital
  • Location of the hospital
  • Surgeon’s fee
  • Medical care
