Treatment / Procedure for Bariatric Surgeries
Bariatric Surgical procedures can be broadly divided into four parts:
Gastric Bypass: This is also called Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. The procedure is carried out in two parts. First of all, a small stomach pouch approximately of an ounce is created by dividing the rest of the stomach then, the upper portion of the small intestine is divided and the bottom end of the divided intestine is connected to the newly created stomach pouch.
Further, the top portion of the divided intestine is connected to the remaining small intestine so that the stomach acids and the digestive enzymes can mix with the food of bypassed stomach.
The new stomach is smaller is size and hence the capacity to eat reduces significantly. The patient will feel fuller even after consuming smaller quantities of food. Calorie intake of the patients reduces considerably aiding the weight loss.
Sleeve Gastrectomy: In this process, the major portion of the stomach is removed giving it a shape of tubular pouch in the shape of a banana. The stomach can hold only small portions of food and hence the capacity to eat reduces.
The surgery has a great effect on the gut hormones impacting a number of factors like reduced hunger, blood sugar control and a feeling of satiety. It is very effective for diabetic patients.
Adjustable Gastric Band: In this procedure, an inflatable gastric band is placed on top of the stomach dividing it from the remaining part creating a smaller stomach. This is a reversible and adjustable procedure and the creation of smaller stomach leads to less consumption of food.
The band restricts the amount of food that can be eaten leading to significant weight loss. This is a laparoscopic procedure and the band can be adjusted from outside later on as per the requirement felt by the doctor. The procedure is fast and non-surgical. It reduces hunger to a great extent.
The Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch: This procedure is a mix of Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy. In this procedure first a tubular sleeve is created by cutting of the major portion of stomach and then a large portion of small intestine is bypassed.
This leads to reduced consumption of food and bypassing the significant portion of small intestine leads to less consumption of calories aiding weight loss.
