Diagnosis for Arthroscopy

Indications for ankle arthroscopy include the following:

  • Pain, swelling, stiffness, instability of ankle not resolved by conservative treatment. 

  • Mechanical symptoms such as locking and popping.

Used to diagnose and treat pathological disorders of the ankle joint like:

  • Ankle arthritis

  • Ankle fractures

  • Ankle instability 

  • Athlete’s ankle 

  • Arthrofibrosis

  • Infection

  • Osteochondral defect (OCD)

  • Synovitis

  • Loose bodies: Cartilage, bone and scar tissue can become free floating in the joint and form what is referred to as loose bodies.  Ankle arthroscopy can be used to find and remove the loose bodies.

Medical examination and tests

  • Present and past medical history to know about the extent and duration of ankle pain, past injury, surgeries performed (if any) 

  • Physical examination done to understand the motion and stability of the joint 

  • X rays and MRI to determine the condition of bones and soft tissue


Before Procedure

  • The physician will discuss with you the procedure 

  • Preoperative evaluation to declare you fit for surgery which includes present-past medical history, complete blood count, urine analysis, clotting factor testing, ECG, X-ray and MRI scans to understand the ankle condition

  • Inform the physician about the medicine and supplements you are taking, the physician may ask to stop few medications before surgery 

  • Inform if you have ever had an allergic reaction

During Procedure 

  • Aim of procedure is to reduce ankle pain and improve overall function. With ankle arthroscopy, ankle problem are diagnosed and treated.

  • During the procedure, an arthroscope is used to see inside the joint and small tools are used to fix the ankle problem.  

  • A tourniquet is applied to the leg. The surgeon will stretch the ankle joint to make it easier to see, he may also inject dye into ankle which will help him to visualize the ankle joint better during the procedure.

  • Two small incisions are made in the ankle to allow the camera and any instruments to be inserted into the ankle. 

  • The inside of the ankle is viewed through the camera and any necessary treatment carried out.

  • For treatment purpose, screws, stitches or pins may be placed in joint

  • After the surgery is complete, the ankle is cleaned and the incision stitched. A sterile dressing is placed over the sutures. 

  • May be required to wear a splint, brace or cast after procedure.

​After Procedure

  • You will be kept under observation, vitals will be monitored on a regular basis  

  • Ankle will be bandaged in sterile dressing; avoid getting the dressing wet.

  • Recommended to reduce weight bearing on the ankle for some time 

  • You will be administered IV antibiotics to avoid any possible infection

  • Pain and swelling may occur and patient will require NSAIDs for a few days 

  • The leg may need to be kept elevated to avoid swelling

  • Sutures are removed one to two weeks after surgery

  • Physical therapy will be required

  • Required to wear a cast, splint, or brace for sometime before beginning to bear weight on your ankle

Though the procedure is safe but complications may occur and rare can include:

  • Infection

  • Bleeding 

  • Blood clots

  • Injury to nerves and blood vessels around the ankle. 

  • Numbness or tingling of the foot , mostly temporary and resolve with time 

  • No relief in symptoms, may require to undergo open surgery on ankle
