Pop-singer The Weeknd might have got our foot tapping with his hit track ‘Can’t feel my face’ and he might just also admit in the song that he loves it but in reality such a symptom calls for medical attention. 47-year-old Jean Cyril from Mauritius couldn’t feel the left side of his face added with other symptoms as well because of a brain tumor.
When did you get to know that you had a brain tumor?
I used to have repeated sessions of painful headaches initially which increased over time. I felt nauseated and soon found myself suffering from imbalance while walking and gradually I felt completely numb on the left side of my face. I went to the doctor in Mauritius, medical investigations were performed and I got to know that I have a brain tumor, more specifically a polycyctic astrocytoma. The good news was that they were slow growing and benign but the bad news was they could develop into multiple cysts and become large in size. I was petrified and flabbergasted. The doctor told me that I would require a surgery.
Where did you have the surgery?
I had a microsurgery at Apollo Hospital in Chennai, India under Dr. M. Balamurugan. I have heard that he is one of the best neurosurgeons in India and has an experience of about 19 years in this field.
Did the microsurgery go well?
The surgery went well. There has not been much scarring as it is a minimally invasive procedure that I have gone through. It is amazing to even think how Dr. Balamurugan performed the whole surgery under a microscope. It is simply marvelous and I am so thankful to him.
How do you feel post surgery?
Post surgery I had been in the hospital for about a week. Dr. M. Balamurugan has been a really responsible and excellent doctor. I did not feel any pain. I thought that after the surgery I might feel terribly weak but that was definitely not the case. A headache was gone and within a week all the other symptoms have also dissipated. It has been great. The expertise of the doctor along with the medical infrastructure and patient care facility at Apollo Hospital has been commendable. After staying in the hospital for a week, I am still now in contact him as further check-ups are required. The doctor said that I will be completely fit to fly back home within 2 weeks.
